At Community Church, art and music are valued spiritual pathways and forms of expression.
We strive to foster this expression by hosting Gallery35, an artist collective and exhibition venue that has been operating since 1966, facilitating art classes and events, holding regular Art Sunday services, and more.

Capturing the Journey
A Solo Exhibit by Kevin Maxwell - Through November 2026
The Gallery35 committee is pleased to open its 2026/2027 season with artist Kevin Maxwell’s solo exhibition— “Capturing the Journey.”
Kevin Maxwell, originally from Salt Lake City, studied fine art at University of Utah. He moved to New York to pursue his master’s in art therapy at NYU, and was an art therapist with adult psychiatric patient services for more than thirty years. Maxwell continues to show his art in locally and in Taiwan, where he lives most of the year, and at Gallery35, which he helped found in 2024. Maxwell says of his work: “I enjoy working in a variety of genres and media . . . but my primary passion throughout my artistic career has been portraiture. I am captivated by and passionate about the thrill of the challenge of capturing my subject’s essence and humanity. I make portraits but I am really interested in what happens between looking and making.”
Gallery35 is happy to announce that artist John Emmett Connors is our new committee chair. Connors, a longtime CCNY member, is a prize-winning artist. His forthcoming book, Journey of an American Artist, documents his worldwide exhibitions and travels.
We look forward to a second exhibition at The Church of St. Mary the Virgin’s gallery space. Our exhibition, “Art as Memoir,” April 10 through May 8, included members John Connors, Michael Davis, Susan Demmet, Pat Garbarini, Juanita Gilmore, Marsha Peruo, Ingrid Slettin, and Beverly Thompson.
