Dear Friend,

We here at The Community Church of New York welcome your interest in our congregation. I have served this diverse community and its members since 1979, and it is a truly remarkable community and institution.

As a Unitarian Universalist congregation, we encourage one another "to grow our souls" - to pursue our personal religious/spiritual journeys in a warm, caring, supportive community. Having our roots in liberal Christianity, we now find nurture for our spiritual lives in many different religious traditions as symbolized by the banners in our Hall of Worship. We celebrate insight and wisdom from Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism, Earth-centered traditions, Judaism and Christianity - to name a few - as well from our own Unitarian Universalist heritage. Many interfaith families call Community home.

As part of our tradition, we celebrate the gift of reason and the principle of the Free Mind. We believe that in thinking for ourselves and in honoring our own experiences of loss and love, of heartache and hope, we then live more deeply and more creatively in the midst of the mystery of creation.

We also encourage one another to put faith into action so that we create a better world, a more just society, and a more compassionate city. In addition to a multitude of programs that strengthen fellowship and support religious growth for adults and children, there are numerous opportunities for helping others, for social action and for social change.

Part of our identity here at Community is our diversity - culturally, economically, racially, and theologically. We honor and celebrate our many differences and rejoice in the honesty, caring and, yes, sometimes struggle to learn from one another. One of our goals is to sustain and expand this richness.

In this sometimes lonely, divided city, I hope you will find and experience the power of this beloved community. Please do visit and participate in the programs that interest you. Your presence will enrich us, and I know we have much to offer that can enrich your life.
Yours in faith,

Bruce Southworth
