Do Justice

“We seek principles to guide our living and to make a more just world.”
Reverend Bruce Southworth, Senior Minister

“Swords into plowshares” ~ Isaiah 2:4

djpicsThe Community Church is a dynamic congregation that has a vibrant, activist commitment in areas of peace-making, protecting civil rights and civil liberties, and addressing systemic oppressions (such as racism, sexism, classism, and hetereosexism). For over twenty years, volunteers have hosted a nightly shelter for homeless men. Most recently, we were recognized as a UUA Green Sanctuary providing environmental stewardship and educational programs for our members and those in the metropolitan New York area.

Doing Justice in the world is an integral part of our history and tradition here at the Community Church of New York. Since the early part of the 20th Century, our Ministers and Members have stood against injustice and inequities in society by helping found and support such organizations as the NAACP and the ACLU. In more recent times the Church has been home to the first NY offices of the African National Congress (ANC), the African Services Committee, and others, plus offering support to numerous pioneering social justice groups in the city.
